5 Quick Sources of Joy
A little sunshine to brighten up a tough season.
Happy Friday, Friends!
The world is on fire these days. We know this. It's unavoidable. So in order to try and offset some of the gloom, today I'm sharing 5 things bringing me joy. I hope these inspire you to start digging up some joy yourself. I like sharing these types of lists once in a while, because...
Sometimes, finding joy is just a matter of sitting down and making a list of things you're appreciating these days.
Reading James for book club.
Well, to be honest, this is a stressful book, but I’m so happy to be reading it! I’m listening to the audiobook, which is perfect because the book is a retelling of Huckleberry Finn from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. He can read and write and only speaks in the enslaved vernacular around white people. Words used throughout his narration include: perfidy and loquacious. I’m here for every stressful and ironic moment.
Birdwatching/listening in spring
Every year, around this time, I start watching the birds around my apartment a little more seriously. Recently, I noticed that robins will hop around, but they don't really fly at this point. Last spring, I asked my brother why they don't just fly, and I had to search through our text conversation from last year to remember the reason. It's because they're looking for worms and ground bugs to snack on! Searching through our old conversations and finding the answer to my question was so much more rewarding than asking a chatbot for the reason why a robin prefers the ground in the springtime.
Having great conversations at work
As a personal trainer, I do more than just help people get into a movement routine that works for them. A big part of my job is helping folx navigate difficult times - perimenopause, diet culture, etc. I share knowledge, but I also just listen and provide reassurance that no, you're not crazy. It really is that messed up. This is one of those core parts of my job that keeps me energized and helps me feel a sense of purpose.
Some great WNBA news
The WNBA and the players union reached a historic agreement that really benefits all the players, rookies and the vets! A supermax contract for veteran players - $1.4 million! Rookies will receive a minimum of $300k! Up from 60k! The average player will make around 600k! A’ja Wilson, a veteran on the Las Vegas Aces, is reportedly signing her new contract for $7 million!
With free agency beginning, March Madness, the WNBA draft, and training camp all happening in the next 2 months, get ready for big changes and great basketball! I can't wait.
The Comeback on HBO
This is just a rewatch in time for season 3 coming in April - Lisa Kudrow plays a slightly desperate sitcom actress wanting to reclaim some of the magic of her past. Valerie Cherish is heartwarming and cringy and just a joy to watch. Highly recommend.
