๐Ÿซถ Political Anxiety Solutions: Part Two

๐Ÿ Community First

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Tomorrow, on October 25th, my friend Jaime (Moonhaus Massage) is hosting HALLOWINE, a night of theatre and storytelling featuring some of the spookiest artists in town. If you need Saturday night plans, join for a show and dancing!

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ If you haven't checked out Hai Bayo, it's officially open! Pop by for a beverage or just to hang out in Uptown's new third space.

๐ŸŒŸ Happy Friday, Friends!

Last week, I shared ways to manage political anxiety in times of unrest. Continuing with that theme, Iโ€™d like to suggest some ways to donate your time and money to support our neighbors as illegal detainment and abduction continue all around us.

In no particular order:

๐Ÿค Street Vendors Association of Chicago

This organization fights for an inclusive economy by organizing street vendors to build political and economic power without fear of police harassment, excessive fines, and discrimination. You can donate to them directly, or you can volunteer with them as a distributor, assistant, or even a grant writer!

๐Ÿ’ต Donate money to food banks instead of canned goods!

Many food banks buy nonperishables in bulk at a discount, but they need money to source the highest impact items. These organizations know what their clients need, so it's a smart choice to donate your money in place of expiring or rejected food. Some local food banks:

  • Care for Real: an organization with locations in Rogers Park and Edgewater with a focus on reducing food insecurity with dignity
  • Lakeview Pantry: another local organization that includes mental health and social services

๐ŸŒฎ Spend money at local, Hispanic-owned taquerias

Everyone loves tacos, but are you getting yours from a local, Hispanic-owned business? We have so many incredible local options, including:

๐Ÿ’Œ Sarah's Circle

This is one of my favorite local organizations, providing housing and health services to unhoused women in our area. I've donated and attended events in the past, and I highly recommend checking out their programs and mission.

โœจ Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Services

This organization has done SO MUCH for immigrants and refugees in our area. You can read about some of their accomplishments and programs on their website. Whether it's health care access, voter registration, or creating momentum in local policy-making, ICIRR is there!

Remember, one of the best ways to manage political anxiety is to help out financially. Especially considering the fact that you can get dinner and still support our neighbors!

With you as we navigate the decline of democracy,
Dana
